Six Ways to Die – Workshop in Hällefors September 21-25

Six ways to die is a an introductory workshop to the Emergency Housing Project and sustainable design in humanitarian relief operations. The workshop takes of with a 24 hour residency in a temporary camp set up in the forests outside Hällefors. On site participants will experience life in a temporary camp and get introduced to the standard equipment used in used in disaster relief operations.

Taking off from the camp experience participants will work in parallel breakout-groups to identify identify areas of innovation and derive ideas for new solutions. The workshop includes lectures and tutoring by rescue workers from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, shelter designer/engineer Vinay Gupta, visiting professors and Formens Hus staff.

Join us @ Tokyo Design Week 2009

The Emergency Housing project have been invited by Svensk Form to participate in the Sustainable Design Summit at the Swedish Embassy Tokyo during the Tokyo design week in October 2009. At the summit we will present the results and ongoing projects within the Emergency Housing Project. We have two open seats for students/faculty involved in the project to join our presentation at the seminar. Through our collaboration with Svensk Form and Swedish Style we can offer discounted flights/residency. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested to join us in Tokyo.

First prototype review – Hard shelled tent in Solid Board

The Chalmers university team lead by Örjan Söderberg and papercompany Smurfit Kappa Lagamill have jointly developed a prototype of a hard shelled tent meeting the Shelter Centre Standards. In September the prototype is to be tested and evaluated by Formens Hus and The Swedish Civil Contingency Agency before being developed further by students from KTH – Royal Institute of Technology.

Transitional living is an international workshop on humanitarian design after natural disasters. Participators will receive shelter training and gain experience in standard equipment used in disaster relief operations. Taking off from real situation testing, participators will identify areas of innovation and derive ideas for new solutions. The workshop includes lectures and counselling by experienced rescue workers and designers. All residency, activities and meals are free of charge for the Emergency Housing Project members and is open for all universities, companies and organisations,

The Emergency Housing project have been invited by Svensk Form to exhibit at the UN University plaza in Tokyo during the Tokyo design week in October 2009. We are proud and to receive such an honourable space and look forward to create an thoughtful and inspiring experience together with our partners and members.

Financing for transport and residence in Tokyo is still to be solved. We are currently seeking sponsorship collaborations.

Transitional Living 02- Workshop September 21-25, Hällefors

After some financial turbulence we are glad to announce that the September workshop Transitional Living 02 will be arranged in Hällefors September 2008. For five days the participators will design, build and live in their own camp and join seminars on emergency relief operations. The aim is to create an emotional and social understanding of of the situation in a refugee camp as well as an understanding of the complex mechanisms involved in relief operations.

Detailed programme will published on the Emergency Housing blog on May 15th. Please confirm your participation and number of students no later than May 5th.

The Emergecy Housing Project @ Shelter Meeting 09a. Geneva, May 7-8

Students from Chalmers University together with Formens Hus / The Emergency Housing project manager Johan Karlsson will attend the Shelter conference 09a on May 7-8 to meet with the international shelter community.

The Shelter conference is arranged by The Shelter Centre cluster and hosted by Swiss Solidarity.

Transitional Living Spring Workshop in Hällefors, February 25 – 27

Chalmers University and Konstfack will join a three day workshop on transitional living at Formens Hus in Hällefors. Lectures, seminars and hands on disaster simulation training will deepen the students awareness on relief housing from a cultural, social and environmental perspective. Programme to be published in January.

Fall Workshop in Hällefors, September 2009

The fall workshop in Hällefors will be the number one meeting place in the Emergency Housing project. We expect 80+ national and international students and faculty to join the five day workshop. The workshop will run in week 38 or 39, please check the dates and let us know what you prefer.

Project immaterial rights – UN or Creative Common?

As agreed upon all emergency housing projects rights are to be given to the UN. However, we would like to propose a new solution: a creative common attribution license.What is Creative Common?
Creative commons basically means that we let others copy, distribute, display, and perform our copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way we request (eg student name/school/formens hus). We believe this solutions will be more beneficial in terms of future implementation and publicity, and more important, it will not take the rights away from the students and it will encourage cooperation.

It will be up to either school to decide whether they go for creative common or reserve their rights to the UN. Please share your thoughts. We expect each school to decide before the projects is launched. More information on creative common licensing, please check: http://creativecommons.org/

Spring start-ups: Chalmers and Konstfack

Chalmers and Konstfack will be the pioneering universities to run classes within the Emergency housing project in spring 2009.

Konstfack Spaces of Conflict
At Konstfack class “Spaces of Conflict” students from the Fine Art, Goldsmithing and Industrial Design departments will examine cultural conflicts in emergency housing situations. The course will run for 5 weeks from Feb 23rd – March. 20th

Chalmers Transitional Structures
Chalmers Class transitional structures will let senior design-engineering students develop durable and eco-efficient building structures. The class will focus on rethinking the current fly-in-fly-out solutions to stimulate structural and ecological sustainability. The course will run part time from January 25th to
