Test day

The testing of the final prototype is complete, and went very well!

Almost the whole group helped building it during the day, and tested it in the afternoon. The test was designed to show how well our device directs and preserve the heat from the burning wood, compared to a typical open fire. We had some issues with how to get the vessel, filled with about 2,5 liters of water, steady in the correct height. But we solved it with a pair of beam sections which acted support.

We used nearly 2 kg of wood per fireplace during the test.

We can sum up the results of the day with just some numbers:

Making of the final prototype

During tomorrow the final prototype shall be built! Complete with handle, bottom and damp.

Also we mean to compare it to a fireplace without any walls or anything. We are going to test how much better our prototype is by boiling water, and see how long it keeps boiling with a given amount of wood.

In the previous tests we’ ve been doing we have also tested if pellets could be a part of our solution, but because it is very hard to get a fire going without some flammable liquid , we have abandoned that idea. Also, it is very heavy to transport in the quantities that would be needed to satisfy the need for the first couple of days.

Cooking device for refugee camps

One problem when there is a disaster, or there is a war going on, is that when thousands of people come together in a refugee camp, thousands of people also want to cook and eat. Today when they cook, they usually make a fireplace existing of some bricks and an open fire. This becomes a problem because the efficiency is rather poor, and a lot of trees has to be cut down. This could be a big problem for the nature to repair. Another problem due to this is that in most cases it’s the women getting the wood, and this result in many cases of rape and other abuses.

One solution to this is making the fireplaces more efficient, and that’s the way we approached this problem.

The project has been running for quite some time now and we produced a few concepts of which in the end we combined two and came up with the final solution. The Cone!
